What is a “Promo Code”?

Promo Codes are usually a part of Welcome Bonuses. They are unique codes you need to enter in the registration form of the bookmaker's website or app to be eligible for their welcome offer. You can find the codes either on the bookie's site (look for promotional banners) or in any number of sports betting sites and blogs dedicated to giving the punters all the current information on offers and bonuses.

Some welcome bonuses might be only for a bookmaker’s app. So, check out the T&Cs of the offer to know if you need to download an app or not.

In most bookmaker sites, you need to enter the Promo Code in the registration form at the bottom of the page. Once you have entered the code and completed the sign-up process, your reward will be given to you unless you need to deposit or bet a certain amount before you can benefit from the Welcome Bonus.

In some cases, Promo Codes can be claimed by already existing members, though these cases are sporadic. If you are an existing client of a sports betting platform and you can benefit from this bonus, don't hesitate to do it. You will need to check out the specific terms and conditions of the offer first and make sure you are eligible.

Promo Code offers to lead to other benefits like Enhanced Odds, Free Bets, Match Bonuses, and Cashback promotions. In the next part of the article, we will review what these rewards mean, how to get them, and what to watch out for when accepting bonus terms.

What is a “Free Bet”?

Free Bets are another form of rewards given to us by bookmakers. You usually receive them as a bonus offer or a prize from a welcome bonus. They come with terms and conditions that we need to complete before we can use them or withdraw them. I will give you an example of a free bet. Let's say that the welcome bonus of an unknown bookmaker is $100 in free bets. You will receive $100 in your account balance, but you wouldn't be able to withdraw them. There are always requirements you need to complete before you can get your bonus. The most common conditions you will encounter in sports betting are:

  • Geographical requirements
  • Turn Over Requirements

A Turn Over requirement is the number of times you need to play through a bet before you can Cash Out. There is a simple formula you can use to calculate the value of a free bet:

Amount of the Free Bet × Turn Over Requirement = Value of the Free Bet

I will give you an example. Let's say that you will get $50 Free Bet as a reward, and the turn over requirement is 5x. You will need to bet $250 to receive your Free Bet and be able to withdraw it. It's only my made-up example, so check out the terms and conditions of the specific offer you are interested in. Each bookmaker has different turn over requirements, and other conditions may also apply.

Another requirement example is Geographical requirement. Let's say that you live in New Jersey, and the bookmaker also operates there. The full terms and conditions of the offer should have territory restrictions, but if you don't find any, then assume that there are none.

Other types of rewards

There are other types of rewards bookies can give us. Some of them are obtainable through a promo code, but most of them you can get by clicking the “My Rewards” or “My Bonuses” menu. The name will be different depending on the bookmaker. Let's see what other types of bonuses we can benefit from:

  • Enhanced Prices
  • Risk-Free Bet
  • Cash-Out
  • Deposit Bonus

Let’s start with explaining Cash-Out. While bookies don't market it as a reward or bonus, we can say that we consider it as such. Cash-Out is the ability to settle your bet before the match/event has even finished. This feature gives us the ability to prevent significant losses that will affect our pockets or guarantee our winnings. Alongside this feature, usually, two more go hand-in-hand with it – Auto Cas-Out and Partial Cash-Out. Check out if this feature is available on the bookmaker platform you use and on which events it is available because bookmakers don't offer it on all games.

A Risk-Free Bet is when the house (bookmaker) gives you a percentage of your initial wager back in case you lose your first bet. For example, let's say that as a welcome bonus, you get up to $500 risk-free bet. Once you place your qualifying bet (not all markets and odds qualify, so check out the specific T&Cs of these kinds of offers before you accept them) if you lose this bet, you will get back a pre-determined percent of your initial stake will to your balance. No matter how much the stake is, the house (bookmaker) will only pay up to $500.

Enhanced Prices are standard on all bookmaker platforms. They  are also referred to as “Enhanced Odds.” You have seen them being offered on bookie platforms. Usually, they change every day, so don't waste time. If you see an event you wish to wager on, and the odds are in your favor, then don't hesitate to place a bet. Not all games are available in this kind of promotion, only the more popular ones.

Deposit Bonuses or also called Match Bonuses are the most common type of welcome bonus rewards. They only require you to deposit a minimum sum in your gaming account. The promotional offers vary from bookie to bookie, but mainly, they offer you a percentage of your first deposit after signing up as a bonus. For example, if the offer is a 50% match bonus and you deposit $30 in your account. Your account balance will be not $30 but $45.
